Earth Day has been celebrated on April 22nd since 1970… half a century now. For all the gains we’ve made in technology and knowledge of the impact that we are having on the environment, we are far from friendly to our Earth. In fact, we have become even bigger consumers. A throwaway society.

I feel as if every day should be Earth Day and I know I am not alone in thinking this way. I try to be environmentally conscious but I know there are so many ways that I could do better. We often take the easy way. One thing I do know is that since returning to the workforce I am finding myself lacking in effort I used to put forth. Of course I could make a ton of excuses to justify my lack of effort…especially time constraints. But lets get real folks…if everyone makes excuses for things they don’t do…then nothing gets done.

Earth-friendly isn’t always pretty

Doing things the old fashioned way isn’t necessarily glamorous. Sometimes it’s downright ugly. But that doesn’t mean it’s not the right thing to do even when it doesn’t fit into our pin-able, post-able social media driven society. Not that social media can’t help in our efforts and teach us methods of doing things we might think are out of our reach and definitely outside our comfort zone.

There are plenty of trash to treasure, DIY projects out there. Again I’m not talking about the glamorous ones that are more new product than the original. Take something headed for the trash or even curbside and repurpose it. Look at items through a different eye. It may not be suitable for its original intention any more but that doesn’t mean it can’t still serve a purpose. Old boots become planters, bicycle wheels become a trellis or even garden art.

Clothing and textiles

The clothing and textile industry is even more unfriendly to the Earth than I realized with 15 million tons of textiles hitting the landfill every year. One pair of jeans uses 2000 gals. of water to produce from field to store. Those are crazy numbers!!!

So what can we do about it… Instead of buying new for everything, try shopping at second-hand stores and rummage sales. Give and accept hand-me-downs from friends. Set up a clothing exchange party. Shop our friend’s closet for items to borrow.

Mending clothes is also an option. Darning socks, adding trim to cover a worn cuff or length to children’s clothes, visible mending with a sashiko method or slow stitching. This can add character and life to your clothes.

I could go on and on telling you in great detail things you already know about being kind to Mother Earth. Instead here is a little list of reminders that might jog your memory with boring you into submission. I think often we get bored too easily and need things laid out simply.

T Tuesday late June garden edition

Gardening

  • Seed saving
  • Composting
  • Trading plants and seeds with others
  • CSA (Community supported agriculture)

Reusable bags

  • Many areas have outlawed plastic bags (due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic this has been repealed in many areas due to risk of contamination)
  • Keep a stash of bags in your vehicle or near your door
  • Purchase at the store or make your own

Less packaging

  • Buying in bulk
  • Choosing products that are refillable
  • Minimal packaging

Programmable Thermostat

  • Adjust the temperature in your home while you away
  • Keep it lower in the winter and warmer in the summer. You can always adjust the amount of clothing you wear.

Other ideas

  • Borrowing or sharing items that are only used a couple times a year
  • Passing down used children’s toys, clothing and accessories.
  • Fixing broken appliances…many times it’s a cheap fix especially if the appliance is old.
  • Doing without…what a novel concept these days

Making changes

If every person made a few small changes in their mindset…heck even one small change and stuck with it…the impact could be profound. Every single day should be Earth Day if we plan to have anything left for future generations.
I am fascinated by the global changes that have happened so quickly during the current COVID-19 crisis due to people and nations in quarantine, factories shut down and the vast majority of people in the US under stay-at-home orders in their respective states. The canals in Venice are clear, fish can be seen swimming through them and even just today I saw a news report of a jellyfish. Air quality is getting better with less industry and less vehicles clogging the roadways each day. Check out this article from the Billings Gazette about how the world is changing with people staying home.
There are countless other ways to make a difference that I haven’t even thought of or touched upon here today. In previous years, I have shared my Earth Day celebration and attempts at living eco-friendly. You can see those here if you had missed them,
Please let me know one way you are honoring Earth day, every day.

Today we have a special edition of T stands for Tuesday. Not only is it Earth Day, it is our hostesses birthday….or bEARTHday as she is fond of saying.

Happy Birthday Elizabeth!

Since it’s Earth Day, I thought I’d give you a little overview of my day and what I do to leave a little smaller footprint.reuseI make my grocery lists on junk mail envelopes if I’m bringing coupons to the store. I’ve lost enough using just a paperclip in the past. Originally when I started using envelopes I used new ones…one day while throwing out junk mail about 17 years ago it dawned on me…I should just use those. Duh!

I’ll be combining my errands today to save on gas. I have 4 places to go all around our bustling little town.

One of those stops will be Goodwill. We were fortunate enough to get a couple bags of hand-me-downs from a friend again. Just in time too since the weather is changing and both kids out grew most of their summer items. donationsAnything that is too worn, stained or holey gets torn up for rags around the house. I wash the standard cleaning job rags but the ones used for the nasty jobs…I just throw away. I figure I got one more use out of that sock with a hole so it’s all good.

In our continuing effort to shop local we signed up for a 1/2 share CSA (community supported agriculture) for the summer. We’ll also be getting an egg share from the same farmer. Soon our freezer will once again be filled with butcher wrapped cuts of meat from the  1/4 of beef for the year. Our neighbors go in on buying a whole cow so it keeps the price lower…the processor is only 20 min from here.

I’ve written several other posts over the years with tips and tricks to help leave a smaller footprint. We can all do our part…no matter how small…it all helps.

Happy Earth Day everyone!!

Personally, I think every day should be Earth Day or at least treated as such. Being aware of what we buy, what we dump, the resources we use and how it effects our planet.

I think so many of us forget about our trash once it hits the can. Out of site, out of mind. I know I’ve been guilty of this.

We are fortunate to live in an area with really great curbside recycling. And I’ve sought out options for a few other items that aren’t curbside recyclable such as #5 yogurt cups…which our county environmental center will take.

Other things we do in an effort to be eco-friendly are:

  • buying in bulk at our local co-op
  • shopping local which includes farmers markets, buying beef from a farmer and shopping at our small local hardware store whenever possible so we aren’t wasting gas driving to the big box store.
  • turning junk into art
  • reusing containers for storage
  • patching clothing
  • making blankets from old clothing
  • buying used whenever possible
  • buying safe, concentrated, plant derived cleaning products for our home as well as our health and beauty products (find out more)
  • grouping errands into one day or just walking for the small stuff
  • drying clothes outside during the summer
  • doing without or figuring out how to use what we already have
I hope some of these have inspired you to your continue efforts help keep our planet
a safe place for all living creatures.
Have anymore tips for me?
I’d love to hear what you’re doing to be eco-friendly!!

PS…it’s my friend Elizabeth’s birthday today..stop by her blog and wish her a happy birthday!

Am I doing anything special to celebrate Earth day…not really. Every day I try to be eco-friendly. I’m not perfect by any stretch but I do give thought to the products I use and the packaging it comes in.

I heard the other day that Minnesota is #2 in recycling in the nation! I’m so glad I have such great curbside recycling. I found out last week our county environmental center is now taking yogurt ( #5 ) cups at their site. Have to start a box for those that I don’t recycle into paint cups and seed starters.

I love to recycle clothing and housewares into other usable objects.  Below are a few examples of my recycled or maybe “up-cycled” projects. We have sweater hats, a t-shirt pillow, jeans quilt, bags from a denim slipcover and tablecloth, quilt from jeans and flannel shirts and a fabric bowl from dress shirts.

What are doing to celebrate Earth Day?

I’m also going to be wishing my good friend Elizabeth a very Happy Birthday! Hop on over to her blog to wish her a Happy Birthday and a chance at a  fabulous giveaway!

I was shocked to see I’m already at 300!

This ATC is made of items that would have been recycled anyway. My way has a little more visual appeal. I used a cereal box, a wallpaper sample and green magazine images. I decided to sew the wallpaper to the cereal box so I wouldn’t have to use glue. Of course I could have cut letters from the magazine to spell my message but a white gel pen was so much quicker.

What did you do today to be a little greener?

Unfortunately, I had to drive the kids to school in 2 different directions. That will be ending very soon…thank goodness. It’s just so frustrating but at least it’s just 2 days a week. I also combine all my errands with these days so I’m not out there driving past the place I’ll need to stop tomorrow. This also saves wear and tear on the vehicle…hubby is an Auto Tech…he preaches this point to me regularly. (love you honey)

I did bring my tote bags to the grocery store to carry home my goods.

On Friday or Saturday we’ll be getting our 1/4 of beef. Buying local…less packaging…less expensive…it’s all good. Plus, I love having all those butcher wrapped packages in the freezer just waiting for me to cook. Last year we got a side of beef…that was TOO MUCH! We still have some roasts and ground beef.

If you want to see how I recycle in my art, check this out.

I am a huge recycler! I learned it from my dad. He was a depression era baby so everything was precious. He was always dragging something home that was destined for the dump. The house I grew up in and our cabin both had stairs leading down from the outside decks that were the stairs in the stands from old Met Stadium. Dad took as much as he could haul and store. I don’t know if the present owners of either place even know where their outdoor stairs came from but it makes me happy to know that dad did his part in saving some history.

A dear friend of mine whose birthday also happens to be today put forth a challenge:

Dr. E wrote “I want to talk a little bit about one of the things that means a LOT
to me: Earth Day, another day we celebrate today. When Earth Day
first started, people who recycled were considered liberals, tree
huggers, and kooks. Composters were arrested in Florida and Colorado
for having eyesores in their yards, and people who wore Berkinstocks
were labeled “odd.” I may be a kook, and I may have a compost pile,
but I believe that if you buy something, you do so with a purpose of
using it until it has been used to its fullest potential. That’s why
I believe we should use our found objects (anything destined for the
trash) in our art and take our food waste to the compost pile. Let’s
celebrate Earth Day by gathering found objects, then making wonderful
art from them.

Therefore, I challenge each of you to make something this week from
one or more found objects.”

I’m going to take her up on her challenge and will post my results later this week.
