Don’t you hate it when your favorite pair of socks gets a hole!
I decided to do something about it. I searched through my old sewing box filled with goodies from the past and found exactly what I was looking for.
A darning tool. Keeping old skills part of the present is a passion of mine. Yes I embrace technology and all that goes with it but there is just something about handwork that really makes me feel accomplished. Or perhaps, closer to my roots.
I set to work stitching and weaving as I have seen in pictures with the darning tool holding the sock firm and providing a surface to drag the needle across…ie: not my fingers.
Given the fact that I was pretty much winging it…I don’t think I did too bad. I learned some things for next time which will likely be soon since the other sock is getting very thin.
My socks tend to gradually thin out over time, so that by the time there’s a hole there’s not enough sock left to darn. I’m attracted by the idea of using old tools to combat a throw-away mentality. It looks like you did a good job of saving that sock :)
You did a fantastic job of repairing that sock. It will last a long time, now, and you can be proud of your darning skills as well as your thriftiness.
Good job Halle!
My feet get so dry I often think it must feel like sand paper to my socks ROFLOL!
Darning eggs have always fascinated me and our parents actually used them too.
I always wonder if it feels like a ‘bump’ in the darned spot?
oxo
I always wondered what it meant to darn a sock. I knew it had to be different from regular mending, but I didn’t know what darning actually looked like. But now I do–thank you!!! :)
I love knowing there is someone else out there darning socks! I’ve done it a bunch to keep my hand knit socks going longer. You did a great job!
I have some socks and mittens to darn. We had a moth infestation in 2013, and it has taken almost 2 years to get rid of them. It is so disheartening to spend weeks (months) knitting a pair of socks and then having the !@#!! moths (well, the larvae) chew 20 holes in them. My darned holes will be a design feature :) I can only now look at them without getting teary….
