It’s that time of year again when the outdoor projects begin to come to an end. The good news is that I have plenty of other interests to keep me busy indoors.
I’ve been canning when the weather permits. I hate water bath canning on a humid day. And before anyone asks…I do reuse my canning lids. I inspect them thoroughly and get rid of any that I have even the slightest question about…actually I do save them for dry goods storage so they don’t hit the recycle bin immediately. Anyway…I remove the rings from my canned goods after they cool…that way if there ever is an issue I could see the lid pop from spoilage. I’m not an expert and I’m not telling you that you should do it my way…I just knew if I didn’t explain myself I would get questions and lectures.
My harvests are dwindling which is fine. We still get our CSA box for a few more weeks.
My teeny tiny carrots make me smile. I’ve never had much luck growing carrots.
But this year I think I will get a lot more teeny tiny carrots since I didn’t thin them out. The tall palm frond looking plants in the garden are ginger. I had some ginger root sprouting in the cupboard so I decided to experiment. I think I’ll leave one to overwinter but dig up the rest for use this fall. I’m not expecting success with overwintering but you don’t know until you try.
Speaking of trying…I’m trying something new with my shed garden. I once again amended the soil with some of our compost…then have been placing the spent plants back on the soil. They have been partially covered with soil from a container that broke. I am looking to do more of a no dig system in this garden. Time will tell.
As it happens ever end of summer, my urge to sew comes in hot. I’m not sure what it is but it isn’t a want…its a need. So weird.
Last winter I made 40 or so of these crazy scrappy blocks. I decided that 30 of them with white sashing would make a lovely throw blanket.
It’s coming along quite nicely. I just have the sashing around the entire outside edge to do.
Yesterday I worked on creating a scrappy binding. I love adding that to my scrappy quilts. When I commit to scrappiness…its a full commit.
Today I had the first of my half day work meeting days leading up to the start of school in a week. It was great to see everyone…old friends and new colleagues alike.
Your vegetable crop looks great, both canned and straight from the garden. I used to help my Mum although in the UK it’s called bottling- still done with the same kilner jars. Your bright quilt will certainly bring back memories of warm Summer days! Belated Happy T Day, Chrisx
Your canning project looks very successful. I’ve never really done that. All your produce is very tempting.
best… mae at maefood.blogspot.com
I reuse my lids when canning also. You are right about checking them though. And wow, I am impressed with your sewing. You are using your scraps in such a beautiful way, and that will be a great quilt. Are you going back to school (to work) this year? Have a great T day and week ahead Halle. Hugs-Erika
Your produce may be dwindling, but it still looks good. Carrots were about the only thing I could grow! LOL, I noticed your cup in one photo. :) Happy T Day!
I canned all weekend. Both water bath and pressure. For me I don’t reuse my lids for canning. I do reuse them for food storage with my food saver, ya know sucks the air out of the jar. Anyway…. your garden goodies look great. One container of carrots were small like that too. Just makes them easy to can. We had such a strange weather summer that my garden did do as well as previous years. Your sewing is just amazing. I just don’t have that talent. Stop by my blog on Thursday to see some garden items and a huge cabbage I harvested. Have a nice evening.
Wow on both projects!
And so sad summer comes to an end – glad you have projects inside that you love and are good at” Happy T-Day!
Hi Halle, well done on canning, it’s a great way to save your veggies. But what hits me most today is your fantastic quilt, love those scrappy blocks, and it will make wonderful throw blanket.Happy T Day! Valerie
Beautiful garden and the scrappy quilt looks so cozy and cheerful. Happy T Day
You have gotten a lot accomplished. Your quilt is looking so colorful.
Love the produce from your garden. I have never thought of removing the canning ring afterwards but that is a great idea. Thanks for the tip.
Happy Tea Day,
Kate
I’m having trouble leaving comments, and that frustrates me. What fun to see your jars of canned goods. Loved the little carrots. You pay extra for those in the stores (grin).
LOVE your scrappy quilt squares and was shocked to see some fabric included was part of a mask you made me.
Thanks for sharing your garden, your canning, and your scrappy squares with us, as well as your coffee for T this Tuesday, dear Halle.
“questions and lectures” lol Questions I get, but lectures?! Oh, dear. It looks like a system that works for you. I’m still using what remains of my mother’s canning jars/lids, though I only use them for dry storage. I think they’ll work fine for that forever :)
Happy T Tuesday
So sad that your gardening year comes to an end. Fall is our main gardening season, I will have tons to do until December. Your canning looks so good – I’ve never done canning. Oh, that scrappy quilt – it looks gorgeous. I love all the scrappy blocks, but that must have been a lot of sewing.
