Welcome to the first edition of Second on the 2nd of 2019. It’s fun to look back and re-share posts from the past. Since my focus lately has been journals I thought I’d re-post a tutorial I wrote about one of the ways I prep a vintage book for altering. The altering after this point is completely up to you.

Take a look…

2/8/2015

Since I was starting a new journal I thought I’d share with you my process for prepping the book.  First find yourself an old book that appeals to you. For me it was the size of this book. Not too small or too big… Just call me Goldilocks.journal prep5

Look inside to see what kind of binding you have.journal prep1

This inside cover gave me a really good indication that I had a sewn binding but I had to make sure.journal prep4

Yep…sewn binding. Perfect! Now we’re ready for the thinning of pages without leaving chunks of torn pages along the inner spine. Removing pages reduces bulk since the altering of a book whether journal style or a themed altered book adds lots of bulk!

I find the center of each signature (as seen in the above photo) and remove the page from each side.journal prep3Like this. I go back and carefully pick out all of the torn fragments. It will appear as if nothing has changed until you look at the page numbers. You’ll have a definite gap which would make reading the story a real challenge at this point.

I remove at least one page from each signature, sometimes more. You can always go back and remove more. journal prep7

Here you can see the gaps along the spine and how the book is more narrow going toward the outer edge. This is exactly what you want. journal prep8

You have a nice stack of pages for your altering pleasure when you are done.

So here’s an after photo of the completed Gypsy journal.

Thanks for stopping by for Second on the 2nd.

Happy New Year!

Here we are beginning 2019 with T stands for Tuesday. Perhaps since its a new year there are new people stopping by for our weekly gathering hosted by Elizabeth of Altered Book Lover.  Each week we share something whether it be travel, the latest art project, a challenge, gardening, fabric arts, trip to the zoo..you name it, you share it..it’s all good. The only thing to keep in mind it is a social gathering so you must have a beverage of choice in your post. That’s it…easy peasy.

Just so I don’t forget…here’s my beverage to start things out.

Mini-me and I picked up some bulk tea at the grocery store the other day. We decided to actually use our fancy smancy teapot for a change. The tea was good but a little pricey. It will be our special tea.

I’ve been working on some embellishments for my December Daily journal. Yes I know December is over. You can read about my dilemma with journal space here.

The tassel was the first addition I made. Then I got to looking at my scraps and decided some little collage pieces would look great in the journal as well.

I really like the little star charm I stitched to this one. Adds a little bling and movement in a really simple way.

The polka dots are my favorite. There is just something about polka dots that just makes me happy.

What are you doing today?

Trust the process.

Trust yourself.

Trust in God.

Trust your choices.

Trust your ideas.

Trust your intuition.

Trust that things will work out in the end.

This art journal page cemented my Word of the Year. I was wavering between a couple of words but when this page came together I knew trust was it.

I love all the texture fabric provides. The stitching and frayed edges. I also love the handmade paper a lovely gift from Elizabeth. She knows how much I love her HMP. Thank you, dear!

I trust that you will have a wonderful 2019…I plan to.

Here we are at the end of 2018. Time to take a look back at the year and discover the highlights.

Such as my word of the year…Discover

Looking back I’d have to say that I made some discoveries along the way.

I discovered a new type of journal keeping that gives me the freedom to do what I want. Not a rigid everyday, writing only journal.

I discovered that I like like making videos of my creations. Not sure where this will go but it’s fun nonetheless.

I discovered how much I love my job now in year 2 back to work. Developing relationships with those crazy kiddos whether they are “mine” or not has been amazing.

Another big discovery was learning to let go of the things I can’t control. This is a work in progress…

I discovered… I am strong, I’m funny, I am clever & creative and I am uniquely me.

I am also a Norwegian from the Mid-west and those statements are as close to boasting about oneself as I dare tread.

I thought I’d share a couple of collages of the important things of my year….from both my personal and artsy/crafsy sides.

Events, travels, triumphs and good clean fun.

So many crafts…so little time.

Now I look forward to what 2019 has in store for me.  Stay tuned tomorrow for the reveal of my 2019 Word of the Year.

There is something magical about a fresh snow fall. It’s so incredibly quiet outside. Its as if the fresh fallen snow acts as a sound dampener. We are expecting snow this afternoon into tomorrow. I can’t wait. We had a nearly brown Christmas this year. Sad for those of us who love the snow.

While awaiting the promised snow I decided to do some art journalling. We had watched a little Bob Ross: Joy of Painting over the weekend so it was him who really inspired me to paint today.

Since I was thinking about starting a new art journal anyway I had the freedom to paint on a black sheet of cardstock.

This is my second 7×7 Creative Memories scrapbook turned art journal for me.

The size is perfect. I also love creating on a separate paper then adhering the finished product to the page.

I added a bit of fine blue glitter over the wet paint to give a little extra shimmer to the page. These words from a Tim Holtz sticker book were perfect.

Linking up today with Art Journal Journey for My Favorite Season

Art Journal Journey

It’s almost here! Winter break. Christmas. Mini-me’s sweet sixteen. New Years. It’s all just around the corner. I’m so ready and not ready all at the same time! So much excitement…so much to do.

Saturday Mini-me and I got up early, grabbed coffee and breakfast( sorry not photographic proof) then drove to Duluth to pick up J for his winter break. Finals are over. He’s off for almost a month.

The weather was beautiful…42°F and sunny! Mini-me and I took a brief walk around canal park before heading to the university to get J and his gear.

The weather is continuing to be very unseasonably warm as we sneak up on Christmas. In fact, Mr. G and I removed the screens and washed windows on Sunday afternoon. Now I know you are all super jealous of our momentous afternoon date. :)

Last week we had a team party at work. We were all asked to bring a $5 giftcard in disguise. As soon as I read the email the cartoon bubble in my head went to work.

Behold…my giftcard in disguise. I had really wanted to make the eyebrows and mustache more “furry” but since I was so sick I wasn’t able to find anything more than some black ribbon.

Since the grass is showing green outside with very little snow anywhere to be found I am looking to our tree to bring up the festive spirit. Maybe some of these words will inspire me more.

What are you doing today?

Crazy!! We are 10 days into December already.  It’s been harder than I thought to keep up with journal writing each day.  I have been collecting things to add to my journal and keeping my thoughts organized though so when time allows I’m able to get it down on paper.

Here are just the first few pages.

The craft sale at school was kind of a bust last week. There were meetings scheduled most days in that space both before and after school…prime shopping times. I spent more than I made. Such as this little mouse ornament.

Isn’t he cute!?! When I saw him I knew I had to get him.

And of course this mug!!!!

You had me with pink. Then add the glitter and brown words. This is technically the second mug I have bought from her, then first one was a coaches gift for Mini-me volleyball banquet. My friend and co-worker does such a nice job with these custom mugs.

On Friday last week I started to get another tickle in my throat. Yep…sick once again. This time I got it bad! I had to call in sick today. I’m not even sure I’ll be able to work tomorrow. I have no voice…barely a squeak at times. I still feel pretty cruddy.

I think I got a little cocky thinking that I’d gotten this far into the year with just a mild sniffle here and there. I know better than to tempt fate like that again.

While I sat huddled under my blanket in my favorite rocking recliner, I knit this cowl for my girl with the yarn I shared two weeks ago.

I love the chunky yarn…such great texture.

I’m about to go make another cup of tea and do a bit more snuggling under my quilt.

What are you doing today?
