It’s taken a while but I’m getting the urge to create at least in my art journal.

In fact, this was the second page I created on Sunday afternoon.

While searching through my stash I found some watercolor color experiments. The colors spoke to me in that fall sort of feel.

The lined page to the left was a shiny paper from junk mail. I didn’t want to cover the lines but at the same time didn’t like the shine. I used some glimmer mists to knock it back.

Yesterday was a rough day for me. I was very emotional which is not my usual state of being. I’m a very stoic person…I’m Norwegian raised in the mid-west. It takes a lot to crack my shell.

I did what I like to call a mind dump on my page. I like to write very messy and somewhat layer the words. This makes it difficult to read. This is purposeful. I need to get it out but I don’t want to go back and relive it later when I’m paging through my journal.

I saved this label from a beer my neighbor shared. (using as my drink reference as well…it’s a twofer) The beer was really interesting. You could taste a hint of orange and copious amounts of honey. I’m not sure I loved it but I did love the label.

It’s not my favorite page in the journal but it served its purpose.

Today is a work day of course with some grocery shopping on the way home.

What are you doing today?

I do love Fall. The crisp mornings, the rustle of fallen leaves, flannels, jeans, hoodies…all the pumpkin goodies. The warm colors of autumn are also my favorites. You’ll find them all over my house and in my art.

I had so much fun pulling together items to layer. Bits of wallpaper, book spine, scrapbook paper, ephemera postcard just to name a few.

I used some distress oxide to bring the background colors together.

I then dripped water and blotted to make the cool light spots. Love that look. This is my first distress oxide ink pad, and I know it won’t be my last.

I’m nearing the end of this journal. Just a few pages left. It’s been a really fun challenge with all the different types and sizes of papers.

It has gotten quite chunky. Good thing I made the cover with a long wrap around tie to hold the chunkiness in.

When it’s complete I’ll do a recap at least of my favorite pages.

It’s that time of year again when the outdoor projects begin to come to an end. The good news is that I have plenty of other interests to keep me busy indoors.

I’ve been canning when the weather permits. I hate water bath canning on a humid day. And before anyone asks…I do reuse my canning lids. I inspect them thoroughly and get rid of any that I have even the slightest question about…actually I do save them for dry goods storage so they don’t hit the recycle bin immediately. Anyway…I remove the rings from my canned goods after they cool…that way if there ever is an issue I could see the lid pop from spoilage.  I’m not an expert and I’m not telling you that you should do it my way…I just knew if I didn’t explain myself I would get questions and lectures.

My harvests are dwindling which is fine. We still get our CSA box for a few more weeks.

My teeny tiny carrots make me smile. I’ve never had much luck growing carrots.

But this year I think I will get a lot more teeny tiny carrots since I didn’t thin them out. The tall palm frond looking plants in the garden are ginger. I had some ginger root sprouting in the cupboard so I decided to experiment. I think I’ll leave one to overwinter but dig up the rest for use this fall. I’m not expecting success with overwintering but you don’t know until you try.

Speaking of trying…I’m trying something new with my shed garden. I once again amended the soil with some of our compost…then have been placing the spent plants back on the soil. They have been partially covered with soil from a container that broke. I am looking to do more of a no dig system in this garden. Time will tell.

As it happens ever end of summer, my urge to sew comes in hot. I’m not sure what it is but it isn’t a want…its a need. So weird.

Last winter I made 40 or so of these crazy scrappy blocks. I decided that 30 of them with white sashing would make a lovely throw blanket.

It’s coming along quite nicely. I just have the sashing around the entire outside edge to do.

Yesterday I worked on creating a scrappy binding. I love adding that to my scrappy quilts. When I commit to scrappiness…its a full commit.

Today I had the first of my half day work meeting days leading up to the start of school in a week. It was great to see everyone…old friends and new colleagues alike.

Today I realized that I have a problem…I am a collector of plants. I never realized it until today. I’ve always had a few house plants but never to the extent that I have now.

I counted 24 as I walked through the house snapping photos. I’m kind of in shock now that I’ve actually counted them.

And now that I look to my left here on the deck I see a fern and my rosemary that overwinter indoors as well.

Yep it is a problem…but a lovely one at that.

Marvin is enjoying some supervised outdoor time with me as I blog this evening. Earlier today he was trying his best to catch a grasshopper. No luck.

I haven’t gotten much crafting done. We’ve had a plumbing issue that has interrupted my craft space and I was too lazy to haul my stuff out and craft elsewhere.

What are you doing today?

Each and every morning I head out to the garden to check on my plants. Gardening brings me so much joy. Going from seed to harvest is a gift.

This season I did not start my own seeds instead I purchased starts through a coworker. I have learned that sometimes you can’t do it all and there is no shame in that.

The beans are finally starting to produce. I’m hoping to harvest enough to can some spicy beans again this year. If not, I still have a stash of jars from last season.

My neighbor once again allowed me to cut her daylilies before the deer had them for a midnight snack. Aren’t they gorgeous?!?

During my time of forced relaxation, I played around with a bag of scraps I purchased quite some time ago from the thrift store. It was a great challenge to pull together cards from a limited palette.

Using only what I had in front of me gave me the opportunity to combine colors and patterns that I typically would not have tried. I simply love the results! This entire pile it ready to go complete with sentiments.

And a whole other giant pile of cards ready for the right words or time.

I’m still working on my journals….really slowly. I’m spending as much time outdoors or with Mini-me, so crafting definitely takes a back seat. Mini-me leaves for college in about a month. It goes so fast.

T stands for Tuesday
What are you doing today?

It’s been a long couple weeks. Last time I posted I was a couple days out from having surgery. Everything went as expected with no complications. Hooray!

The hiccup happened 8 days into my recovery when I started feeling sick…flu like. Of course I was worried that it was something crazy going on internally…nothing like jumping to the worst possible conclusion. Nope, that wasn’t it…it was COVID. Seriously, I have been exposed literally dozens of times at school over the past two years and have never gotten it. The only thing I can think is that my immune system was overloaded healing from surgery that it just couldn’t fight the ‘rona too. No one else in the house got it. Again, crazy!

While I was isolating myself from the rest of the family I decided to do a bit of lap crafting on the deck. I’m working on the travel journal/scrapbook from our 2019 trip. It was fun and a good challenge to use limited supplies.

Marvin loved the time on the deck with me. So many sights and smells.

Speaking of sights….Look at that lovely radish. There is more than one I promise. The most I’ve ever successfully grown. They usually bolt before producing anything for me.

This morning I was finally able to weed the garden and mulch. It was pretty pathetic looking after a couple weeks of neglect.

My tomato plants are all thriving. So pleased with the growth. Now if they produce as well as I hope I’ll be all smiles.

I did get an art journal page created over the weekend. I really struggled to get this one to come together. I think it was created over the course of several days.

I don’t love the washi flower sticker on the right side of the page but I knew if I tried to pull it back up I’d pull paint from the fragile page.

Summer is flying by. It always does. I have so many things I want to do before the school bell rings again. Time to make that list and start crossing things off!

I’m pretty sure I was as excited for the last day of school as the kids were this year.  It was a LONG year.

The last couple weeks, all I could think about was getting outside and playing in the dirt. I picked this arrangement from the yard. The Irises were laying on the ground because their stems were too long and spindly. I thought that was a shame so I cut them off and gathered some greenery to fill the space.

I also got my garden planted. I’m really late this year but I’m sure it will be fine.

The deck box garden has radishes, carrots and herbs. I also planted a few flower seeds this morning.

This view has green bean, wax beans and snap peas….along with a bunch of weeds…mostly grass.

Over in this side of the shed garden I have cucumbers as well as some zucchini and summer squash that will hopefully germinate.

I’m growing my tomatoes in pots again this year since I had really good luck last year.  I also have a couple jalapeno plants growing in this same manner. Right now all the plants are pretty small and frankly not that interesting to look at.

Before leaving school for the last time, we had to clean out our room and the two storage rooms inside our space. None of the stuff in the storage rooms belonged to us so as items were found they were given new homes.

Such as all the movie theatre cardboard cutouts.

The media center was the perfect place for these gems.

You should have seen all the kids…and adults…taking selfies and filming silly videos with the props.

It made the lame task of cleaning out a closet so much more enjoyable. Next fall we will have brand new flooring. They are finally tearing up and replacing the old asbestos tiles. Its taking a while but eventually our 60+ year old building will reach the 21st century.

As for me this week I’m trying to get as many things crossed off my list as I can. I have a same day surgery on Thursday that will put me out of commission for a while. Hopefully the family will remember to water the garden for me while I recuperate.

I’m also kicking myself…I gave a journal to one of the teachers at school who is leaving to teach in another district. I totally forgot to take any photos. GAH! I love to document my creations not just for the blog but for me. Oh well not the end of the world.
