T Tuesday: smudge stick edition

Last updated : April 10, 2016

During the process of putting the garden to bed for the winter, I drastically trimmed back my herbs. Now I am crossing my fingers that the plants themselves will overwinter.

Anyway I decided to make some smudge sticks as I have heard that burning sage helps deter mosquitoes.  Worth a try.

I found a spool of heavy duty cotton button thread in my stash and set to work.

Smudge sticks

I likely could have made 4 bundles but honestly they were a pain to make. It will be interesting to see if they work next summer.

I’m linking up once again with Elizabeth for T stands for Tuesday

vintage look tea

my beverage is coffee again. Soon with the weather changing I’ll be back to tea to stay warm.

Lots on calendar today including 2 doctor appointments.

What are you doing today?

Those smudge sticks look good, hope they work well after all the hard work. I had to go to the doc’s today, too, and have 3 more appointments to keep me occupied. Look after yourself, Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie

I’ve not succeeded in overwintering my herbs, and I’m not going to try this year. I hope your smudge sticks work for you next year. They’ll smell good in the meantime, I know :)

    Happy T Tuesday!

Nice work making your smudge sticks with the fresh herbs…well nice smelling anyway.

We’ve used stick incense out on our open porch before…but those dingdang mosquitoes can be relentless sometimes. You’ll have to let us know how your bundles work.

    Happy T Day oxo
p.s. it’s a gorgeous sunshiny 70 degree day here and because we had a frost already no skitters :-)

is that lavender along with the sage? or something else? they will be wonderful smelling as they dry…hope they work for you…and it seems like I read that the native Americans burned it as a spiritual ritual. At any rate, a great way to use your herbs! I’ve dried sage before and put in plastic baggies for adding flavor to chicken dishes. Love sage, and a pretty color too! happy T day!

I have made smudge sticks and gave them all away. Now my sage is dead. It overwintered the FIRST year, but not the second. I hope yours does, since your area gets colder than mine.

I can’t tell if that’s lavender or rosemary. They both look similar to me. I’ve never tried either of them as smudge sticks, but may try to do so with some lavender. Be prepared, because once they dry, they shrivel up and you have to keep tightening the string.

Thanks for sharing these AND your coffee with us for T this Tuesday. BTW, I’m trying to catch up on my posts and think of what I’ll do for AEDM today!

You really say that? That plants overwinter? If I wrote that, other Swedes would call it Swenglish, because that is what we say in Swedish, but I never heard the expression in English. I learn something new every day! It´s like when I learned that it is correct English to “slake one´s thirst” with, well T for example. Amazing how close the languages sometimes are. Happy T-Day!

Hope they drive away the mosquitoes. Isn’t it wonderful to have a herb garden?

I’d never heard of smudge sticks. It sounds a good idea. Do you let them dry and then hang them somewhere in summer? I bet they smell nice. Here rosemary grows wild and I can get hold of sage too, so if they work, I will follow your example.
    Have a great week,
    Lisca

Your smudge sticks look great. I didn’t know they kept mosquitoes away. I’ve always used them for kind of cleansing the energy. I smudged this place when I moved in.
    Happy T-Day! :)

Your smudge stick look great ♥ I can over winter the sage but the rosemary has to come inside and then it’s a crapshot wither it makes it or not. Which reminds me I still have one to bring in … Oh O!
