This journal page started as something so completely different…even the color scheme took a sharp left from pinks and greens to blue, brown and yellow. So strange when that happens. I try not to over think it…just let it happen. Besides…my indecision created some very wonderful background texture and interest. So yeah…I totally meant to do that!

Freehand cut both the tree and bird from book page. The tree worked out ok but the bird needed a little something more. I glued my little bird to a scrap of handmade paper Elizabeth gifted me. Now she looked a bit more substantial but was still missing that pop I was looking for.

So I decided to cut a tiny wing for my tiny bird. Now she really is ready to fly!!

Ok this is one of those crazy days that happens…we have a crossover post.

Honestly its likely a good thing because I have so many things to talk about but have nothing prepared and I’m already late to the party. How does that happen?

Anyway…Mini-me made it back from Costa Rica on Thursday evening…we left for Duluth the next morning. Busy weekend then back to school on Monday. WHEW!! What a crazy few days.

I’ll share more about all that in another post but I thought I’d at least share a bit about the coffee Mini-me brought home the Doka Coffee Plantation.

I borrowed this photo from Twitter of the group tossing the raw beans in the air.

This is one that we’ve opened and tried. It’s very good. It seems to me that the caffeine content might be a bit higher than what we usually drink. We haven’t tried the other kind she brought back yet.

Now on to Second on the 2nd….

I have been attempting to join more challenges lately. Before I rejoined the workforce I participated in challenges regularly and it really kept my creativity flowing. Here’s a post from on of those fun challenges I did way back when.

Take a look….

Sage and SepiaThis is the last week of Summer of Color! I can hardly believe it.

This is the color combo I’ve been voting for each week. The strange thing is now that I got it…I had trouble making it work. The photo color is a bit off for the green but my “Photoshop fu” is off this morning.

I painted the background with sage then distressed it a bit.  After adding the sepia elements, I used some white rub-ons for visual interest. The bride and groom are my maternal grandparents circa 1929.

Incidentally, this is my 1000th post! WHOA! That’s a lot of blogging. Thanks to everyone who continues to read. I love it when you leave comments to let me know that you’ve been here.

Thanks for stopping by my twofer post today!

What are you doing today?

I’m not exactly sure what it is but rick-rack gives me a comforting, nostalgic sort of feel. Almost like an embrace from the past.

After white washing the pages I added a lovely napkin over top then enhanced some of the color with a bit of gelato.

I love how the thin napkin lets the words peek through. Just a hint….not all. I added a Tim Holtz phrase sticker because I can’t seem to make a page without words. At least not very often.

I thought I might be done with the page when I noticed a scrap of paint chip…perfect for a bit of journal writing. I had to document my feeling of nostalgia from the rick-rack.

I am in love with this page. I don’t often say that about my work but this one really makes me happy!!!

Dare I say that spring has sprung. At least that’s what I’m hoping.

The warming temps, melting snow and spring break have me thinking Spring.

I partially covered my book pages with scraps of paper then used gelatos blended with baby wipes to give some soft pink color to the background. It was a little too pink so I used a palette knife to drag thick white paint over the top.

I knew I wanted some flowers so I drew them lightly with a pencil then filled in around with gesso. After it had dried I came back in with a black colored pencil. I cannot find my charcoal pencil anywhere!! The black outline made my flowers pop.

Now that I had flowers and PINK it was time for just the right words.

Happy Spring!

The sun was shining brightly today just daring you to step outside. It looked beautiful. Snow glistening a pristine white. It was all an illusion. Our daytime temperature stayed in the negative°F all day. Did I mention I’m DONE with Winter? I decided to throw some creative energy towards Spring.

I thought of a wild riot of color. Pretty pastels. Flowers in the peak of color sharing their joy of Springtime.

I put together a phrase from my found text stash that reflected my feeling about my wish for spring.

Recently the cold weather had me reaching out for warmth anywhere I could think of…it really showed through in the warm colors of this journal page.

Can’t you feel the warmth radiating off the page?? Come on now…use your imagination..ah isn’t that better. Toasty warm.

The image I chose made me think not of a masquerade ball as intended but to something sneaky…not dark and sinister but sly and cunning. I had to find the right words to match my thoughts.

Don’t you just love it when things work out like that!

Did you check out the texture!?! My first layer on this page was tissue paper. Over top I blended several shades of yellow and orange with my fingers until the overall look pleased the senses. Seeking more texture I attempted to stamp with some nearly ancient pigment ink pads…alas they left very little mark. Then I had the idea to smudge them here and there then sprinkle clear embossing powder over top. I had hoped I’d get more color from the ink…it was not to be.  Then I decided to get even more aggressive with the ink pads and use some UTEE in copper. I really love the end result.

I also added some bits of leftover rub-on quotes I had laying around. I think it adds to the mystery of the page and what the masked woman is planning to deny.

My last step was to add a bit of India ink loosely around the edges to act as a frame.

Lately most of my time has been spent creating journals, writing in them or thinking about them…but not art journals.

I tend to do this…I get completely obsessed with one thing and virtually abandon the rest for a time. Art journals and mixed media always find there way back to me. They are my true calling.

Today though I knew I wanted to art journal. I started out with some dress pattern paper and gelatos for that lovely aged yellow color. I added bits of torn fabric and papers in opposite corners of my spread. I then added some red and gold with a variety of sprays and golden paints.

After that I wasn’t really sure other than I thought I needed another color…something contrasting. I came across a tattered book mark in my stash. The colors of the flowers matched perfectly and the blue gave that contrasting color I was looking for.

After I decided on the wooden bird for the opposite page I dug out my sealing wax just for fun. I haven’t use it in ages. My cousin and I got little sets back in the early 1980’s when we were girls and wrote letters to each other. I still have my set and a few more seals that I’ve picked up over the years just because they are pretty and kind of a unique thing to come across at a rummage sale.

I happened to find a journal tag that was the right color blue to act as a perch for my bird. The words we flew jumped out at me from my box of found text. I thought a bit of loopy thread gave some nice texture and was a bit reminiscent of a nest.

The tag looked a little boring so I used a bit of distress ink on a script stamp for a little more vintage feel. I didn’t have a brad the right color so I dipped a white one in paint then sprinkled with baking soda. once it dried It had a nice muted appearance in just the right color.

I’m super happy that I gave in to my impulse and got creative today.
