Lake Superior 8/12/08

You just can’t get much more beautiful in my eyes even on a misty grey day such as this.

The shore is an easy 1 mile hike from Gooseberry Falls.

The wind was off old Gitche Gumee but it didn’t stop us from enjoying the view.

Aren’t the huge chunks of rock that have fallen amazing!
We hiked to this same spot 8 years ago and are pretty sure that at least one or two of these chunks hadn’t fallen yet. The ledge seemed much wider before.

No art to share…just the fruits of labor.

I’m so thrilled that we are actually getting fresh produce from our crummy potted veggies.

We’ve been using and sharing our fresh herbs for quite some time and enjoying them thoroughly but harvesting fresh veggies (OK, I know technically a tomato is a fruit) just thrill me!

Take the test!

Wasn’t I just saying that I was very protective of my children’s images??!!??

The little one beckons for me to come to her and this is what I find…

My cute little yellow pear shaped tomato plants are starting to ripen!

These are actually #’s 4 and 5 off the plant. I was overzealous an ate the first 3 after a quick rinse before documenting my success.

I’m crossing my fingers that the big tomatoes ripen as well. I’ve been having trouble with them turning black on the bottom…not all but some.

The challenge now will be keeping them watered and alive in the 90+ heat.

Can you believe the size of these tomato plants?!?!

Actually, there are 2 plants in each pot. I did that because I wasn’t sure they’d even make it.

My hubby bought this organic garden soil. After potting up the tomatoes and a bunch of herbs I discovered that it said on the back of the bag “NOT FOR USE IN CONTAINERS”. I just crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. It certainly worked well!

The white pot has regular tomatoes, I believe Celebration was the name. The other is the little yellow pear shaped tomatoes. A childhood favorite of mine. :)

To give you a little perspective, the deck railing it about 5 feet off the ground. The plants are at least 3.5 feet by themselves and the stems are at least 3/4 of an inch in diameter.

We got hit with the first round of storms earlier this afternoon. We snapped a couple of quick shots of the hail out the doors.

The weather folks are saying we’ll be getting another round overnight. Joy.

Upon our preliminary inspection the, up to quarter size hail, didn’t do any real damage to our house but we’ll have the roof inspected by a pro after this week of storms in finished. Yes, I said week. The forecast is chance of thunderstorms every day for the next 7. Joy.
