Hey there…glad you stopped by today. It has, once again, been quite some time since my last post. I had good intentions of posting more but the motivation to sit in front of another screen after doing it all day just wasn’t there.

I’m all about sitting  in front of my sewing machine though.

Now that all staff will be back in the building, my home office area can become a sewing station.

I pulled the quilt top I had previously completed out of the closet and have been working on revamping it a bit and creating a quilt back complete with a signature in a block. I’ll show my terrible embroidery skills when I get the quilting done.

This is what kicked me back into sewing mode…a big bag of scraps from a coworker. Her and her girls started a small business/side hustle sewing scrunchies then masks and now they have added aprons. She saves her off cuts and scraps  for me. So many fun bits of fabrics! I ironed every scrap and began cutting pieces for a scrappy quilt pattern I saw on Pinterest. The pieces are so small…I am having a bit of regret. I may just set that stack aside and use it for something else.

Speaking of Pinterest…this was really weird. I was scrolling through Pinterest on my phone during my lunch. For those not familiar with how Pinterest works, if you don’t specifically search for something the site picks things it thinks you’d be interested in based on previous things you’ve looked at and things people you follow have posted. So like I said I’m scrolling along in my “for you” pins and I see these…

Those are my own projects. Things I had blogged about and pinned forever ago. So weird seeing your own creations like that. “hey we think you’d like this…” ah yeah I would, I made it.

So what else is new…hmmm… J is back up at college for Spring semester. He is happy to be back even though he has different roommates and a different apartment(a nicer one in my opinion). Even though most of his classes and his tutoring job are online, he has one course with a lab component so he had to be there in person. Unlike Mini-me who got a lab kit to bring home.

She extracted DNA from blueberries right in our kitchen. It’s actually a really fun lab that I do with my 7th graders.

Speaking of Mini-me…she was invited to participate in a competitive scholarship by the University will be attending in the fall. She got 2nd place which is basically half of her tuition paid each year plus a one time stipend to be used for approved study abroad, supplies or research. We are so incredibly proud of her…she works so hard and now all of that hard work is playing off in a very big way! I could continue to gush about her recent accomplishments but I really don’t want to be that mom.

All staff went back to school today. This is my new look when working in person with kids…super fun. I am on the list to get my first COVID-19 vaccine. I had to pass up my first opportunity since I had just gotten my Tdap vaccine. Of course, getting the COVID vaccine will not make the mask and shield go away this year. I was actually surprised once I had it on my face and starting working, it didn’t bother me like I thought it would. My only real issue is the need to push up my glasses regularly….not easy.

What are you doing today?

Two posts are colliding this week as T stands for Tuesday and Second on the 2nd fall on the same day.

Thankfully Elizabeth gave a little heads up at the end of her post that reminded me before I finished writing up my post. Time to switch gears.

We’ll start with the fun packages in my mailbox from two fellow T stands for Tuesday bloggers.  So fun to get mail…friend mail, not so much on the bills or junk mail. A little while back I had commented on Krisha’s blog about the winery she had visited. She was so kind to offer me some extra wine labels they picked up as collage fodder. I was so delighted to see an envelope in my PO Box the other day. Look at the great craft fodder and lovely card. Really love that card!

Thank you Krisha!

I also received a box of goodies along with a 3rd anniversary ATC for T stands for Tuesday from Patty @ Magpie’s Nest.

She knows my love of bottle caps.

So many fun bottle caps and a bunch I’ve never seen. Too fun. Patty also included some bits of collage fodder as well. Can you see the beautiful ATC that precipitated the package in the first place?

Isn’t she lovely?!?  So many tiny details. I keep noticing more and more little things that I didn’t see the first time around.  Thank you Patty!

And now for the Second on the 2nd portion of today’s post.

Three years ago I took a quick photo of a hostess gift I was bringing to our annual Independence Day gathering. Little did I know this post would eventually become the most visited post on my blog. (More on the at the end.)

Take a look…eyes

July 5, 2013

We spent Independence Day, as we have the past several years, at a friend’s house along the parade route in town. It’s always a great time.

I wanted to do a little something extra for our hostess who puts so much time and effort into making sure everyone has a good time. She’s a big fan of Rum and Coke. It ended up being a centerpiece on the buffet table.

I’ve seen over the years that the re-pins of this image on Pinterest have multiplying but it wasn’t until an update in their software did I notice that all of the re-pins now count up on the original. Check out this screen shot I took last night.

Amazing! When I look at my blog analytics it definitely shows that people are visiting from that pin as well.  Not 24,000 pages loads but a significant amount especially given the fact that this is a 3 year old post.

For today I’m going to try and stay cool while running an errand or two. I really need to do some baking and canning but…ugh…not in this heat!

What are you doing today?

I made this barn wood and fabric cross piece entirely from scraps. Yep, leftovers from other projects…not a dime spent.

Holy scrap barnwood and fabric cross

The printed fabric was from the curtains I recently shortened and lined, the barn wood came from the same gal as they had leftovers from remodel project and the brown suede was from a jacket I cut up long ago.

My inspiration was from Pinterest. There were no directions but the idea seemed simple enough. I used a staple gun to attach the fabric and a hot glue gun to adhere the suede center piece. Five minute project…seriously. I gave it to the family that just remodeled as sort of a “new space” warming gift since it perfectly matched the room. :)

I’ve been loving all the new and creative wreaths that are showing up in home decor, magazines and of course Pinterest. That being said…I have to admit I’m not a big fan of seasonal decorating. Not that I don’t love it when it’s done but it’s exhausting. The unpacking, placing, fussing, moving and dusting only to have to start the process over again in what perhaps a month. And don’t even get me started on storage of said items!!

I decided that a decorative wreath could be just that…decorative…without being seasonal if done right.

I love the look of burlap… It’s neutral yet interesting with the texture. A great base. I did a search on YouTube to find out how to create my base.

This was an excellent video.

So I purchased this wreath base…

and this roll of burlap and set to work.

The video was perfect and helped me create the basic burlap wreath.

Now came the fun part. Figuring out all the elements I wanted to include. Off to Michael’s!

After adding the items I purchased, I decided to include several of my paper flowers. I loved how they made sense with script the monogram and tied the elements together quite nicely.

I simply love how it turned out! It’s a little more feminine than I had intended but it has the vintage feel that flows throughout our livingroom.

I love having access to a creative communities both in real life and online. Elements and ideas from the multitude of wreaths inspired my own unique creation.

How do you use online creative communities such as blogs, forums and Pinterest?

  • Step by step direction to create the exact item you fell in love with?
  • Inspiration?
  • Something to get you started?
  • A resource?

As I’ve said many many times…I spend a lot of time on Pinterest. I’m often inspired by the images I see. I’m not one to completely copycat but tweak the design a little for my own use. Sometimes it’s color combos that make me run downstairs to create. Other times it’s the curve of a line, interesting texture or a simple splat of ink that has my mind whirling.

Before a stomach bug took me out of commission for a couple of days, I was inspired by this image and my new found interest obsession in weaving, to create this card.

woven text with heart

Actually I made a couple cards since I had strips cut.

The cards in turn inspired me to create this journal page.

The Yogi tea tag was a serendipitous find in my stash.

I have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest. So often I see something that I fall in love with and want to create for myself and the link either goes now where or just to the photo of the thing I was enamored with in the first place even if it clearly stated that it was a tutorial. This is where the experimentation takes over. I see my goal…now I need to figure out how to get there.

I’m continuing to experiment with  different stitches and patterns on my knifty knitter loom. I saw a really cool dish scrubbie on Pinterest but the link did no good. After studying the photo a bit I came up with my version.20141206_7331

I honestly don’t know the terminology for all the stitches…I am a visual learner.

If you are here actually looking for the pattern I will sum up what I did in “Halle speak” and hopefully it will make sense. :)

Using 2 skeins, cast on all 24 pegs continuing the circle as if making a hat. Knit 20 rows. Bind off. Close both ends of tube and flatten. I sent the strings from one side through to the other and tied them off so it would stay flattened.

So maybe after all my complaining…I’m guilt as well.  I have no step by step directions. Good luck!

Ok, in the grand scheme of things…this wasn’t that messy at all.  Little J spotted this recipe for homemade flubber on Pinterest.20140325_4531I was careful to use glass bowls and disposable plastic spoons to begin with.

20140325_4532After pouring off the excess water…it was time to dig in with my hands…at least I remembered to take off my wedding ring. ;)

20140325_4534Little J thought it looked like I was having way too much fun with her flubber so she traded off the camera to me.

20140325_4537We made the flubber a pale lavender color that doesn’t show terribly well in the photos.20140325_4538Finally it was time to play. The flubber is more viscus than silly putty and a little wetter feeling. It’s a solid that behaves as a liquid. Some cool science going on there.

Of course, I had to show the kids that when stuck in a jar with any air gap, pushing on it makes the most satisfying “toot” noise.  You know…passing gas…breaking wind. I’ve always used the word “toot” instead of the version of that word that starts with and f and ends with a t.  I hate that word….not sure why but it just irks me…even more so when I hear young kids saying it. There, now you’ve just learned another quirk of Halle…you’re welcome.
